As a transfer student, your diverse experiences and achievements add vibrancy to the 51动漫 Law community.

We look at your unique learning history to find ways to help you transition. We檙e ready to answer your questions about financial aid, our law reviews, advocacy programs, and more. We also assist with finding housing and getting around Boston.

To get a feel for our campus, you檒l benefit from attending orientation. We檒l also invite you to a special luncheon for transfer students held with faculty, staff, and current students.

Transfer Student Resources

Applying

The basics for transfer admission: 29 credits, one year of full-time study at an American Bar Association-approved law school. Advanced standing may be awarded for a maximum of 32 credits. The top criterion for admission is your law school performance so far.

Career considerations: You need two years of full-time study at 51动漫 Law for your JD degree. Please check the character and fitness requirements for bar admission in the state where you intend to practice.

  • Completed and signed transfer application
  • Letter stating your reasons for wishing to transfer
  • Letter of good standing from the dean of your current law school听
  • Transcript of all law school grades, including class rank if available
  • Letter of recommendation from a current law professor听
  • A copy of your CAS report from LSAC, sent directly to 51动漫 Law
  • Resume
  • $85 application fee

51动漫 Law reserves the right to interview transfer applicants at the discretion of the Office of Admissions and Office of Career Services.

Financial Aid

Transfer students can be awarded up to $20,500 in the federal Unsubsidized Loan Program. Additionally, transfer students are eligible to apply for the federal Grad PLUS loans to supplement the unsubsidized loan and help pay for living expenses. The FAFSA must be submitted in order to be eligible for federal aid.

Upon acceptance, an initial review of your processed FAFSA data will take place, and the Financial Aid Office will determine your eligibility for federal unsubsidized and Grad Plus loans. Award notifications are accessed via Boston College's intranet system, known as the Agora Portal. You will receive credentials for accessing Agora shortly after admission.

Transfer applicants are not eligible for merit scholarships awarded through the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, but we encourage you to explore external scholarships and additional funding opportunities in the .

Career Services

Transferring to a new law school in your second year is a bold step toward realizing your professional goals. At 51动漫 Law, we don't just "enroll" transfer students; we partner with you to develop and support your career strategy.听

After you complete your 1L exams, you will gain full access to the CSO. But as soon as you commit to 51动漫 Law with your initial deposit, you will be able to access:

    • Dedicated Career Mentorship: You will be paired with a CSO advisor specializing in your specific practice area of interest to strategize for your immediate and post-graduate professional goals. For admitted transfer students who commit to 51动漫 in May, our CSO will offer one initial meeting to help you begin your 2L career-development strategy.
      • 51动漫 Law Resources: Access select 51动漫 Law 1L resources for resumes, cover letters, networking, interviewing, alumni connections, and other career tips.

      After you complete your exams and transition to enrollment at 51动漫 Law, you can expect:

      • One-on-One Meetings, Until You Reach Your Goals:听Regular meetings with your CSO advisor throughout your summer and 2L fall until you secure your 2L summer position.
        • Targeted Recruiting Programs: While our largest OCI program for the Class of 2028 took place in February, transfers into this class will have access to all public and private sector recruiting programs that take place after you have completed your second semester final exams at your home school.
          • Public Interest Retreat: For those considering pursuing public interest law, apply to attend our two-day public interest law retreat in September 2026.

          Housing

          Law Reviews & Advocacy Programs

          • Law reviews:听The Editorial board holds an annual transfer student writing competition, with winners receiving offers on an as-available basis.
          • Advocacy programs: Second-year transfer students are eligible to participate in the Wendell F. Grimes Intramural Moot Court competition. Students who participate in the Grimes Competition are eligible to try out for a position on one of our national moot court teams of third-year law students competing at regional, national, and international competitions.听Second-year transfer students may also compete in our internal mock trial competition and try out for a position on our National Mock Trial Team, which is composed of second and third-year students. The team competes against other law schools throughout the country.

          Mentoring

          In addition to faculty and administration mentors, the 51动漫 Law Students Association New Student Committee coordinates a peer-mentoring program for first-year students and transfer students. In the summer you檒l receive a survey to match you with a peer mentor. Contact the transfer liaison on the New Student Committee听for more information.

          FAQ

          When can I apply for transfer admission?

          Our application will go live in the LSAC portal on听January听15. The application deadline is August 1.

          Are scholarships available for transfer students?

          Unfortunately, we don檛 offer any scholarships to transfer students.

          How will I be ranked in my 2L year?

          We don檛 rank students. After each semester, we issue an approximate grade distribution, which includes your 51动漫 Law grade point average. We don檛 factor grades from your original law school into our average.听

          Does my LSAT score matter?

          Academic performance in your 1L year is the top consideration, but we review all information.

          How many transfer applications do you receive? How many students enroll?

          The numbers vary every year. Typically, we receive approximately 100 transfer applications and enroll 1020 transfer students each year.

          Do you accept transfer students who were enrolled part-time at their previous schools?

          Yes. However, we accept a maximum of 32 transfer credits from another ABA-approved law school.听

          What if my law school is unable to submit my materials by the August 1 deadline?

          We檒l accept documents from your law school after the August 1 deadline. We cannot, however, review your application until it is complete.听

          Is there anything that I can do during my first year to enhance my transfer application?

          Your academic success攄emonstrated by your law school transcript and letters of recommendation from professors攎atters most when transferring.

          Are dual degree programs feasible for transfer students?

          Under limited circumstances, transfer students can earn dual degrees from Boston College. Contact Academic Services for more information: 617-552-2527.
