Graduates of the Transformative Educational Studies program will be able to:

• Identify and critique the hidden value assumptions in commonplace educational practices;
• Distinguish between formal and informal education, and between teaching as transmission and as transformation;
• Articulate the principles of holistic education;
• Offer an informed and reflective response to the question, What does it mean to be an educated person?;
• Describe the educational aims according to which they have shaped their own college education;
• Understand the historical resonances of contemporary educational debates;
• Explain the origins, affordances, and limitations of modern schooling;
• Analyze educational policies and trends intelligently and defend their judgments with persuasive force;
• Situate domestic educational discussions in a global context;
• Identify the educational dimensions of the major social challenges of our times;
• Understand the links between individual and social transformation;
• Describe the philosophies, practices, and approaches of transformative educators, schools, and school systems;
• Be conversant with the tools of the humanities and humanistic social sciences; have skill in interpreting texts and analyzing arguments; be able to pose good questions and defend possible answers to those questions in clear and thoughtful prose;
• Have an enriched understanding of their own ongoing formation;Ìý
• See themselves as engaged citizens in a pluralistic society, working to enhance human flourishing to make the world more just;
• Bring critical insight,Ìýimaginative vision, and value-centered leadership to a variety of positions”for example, teaching, curriculum design, program leadership, policy analysis, humanitarian development, and professional education”in schools, districts, foundations, think tanks, government, NGOs, and the corporate sector.
